Benefits of the Outdoors

Mental health disorders and substance use have a tendency to co-occur. Symptoms that mimic depression or anxiety, or actual depression and anxiety, are rather common with those in early recovery or those who are actively using/drinking. However, evidence has shown that being outside and participating in activities can decrease symptoms of depression. It also provides opportunity for increased socialization. The health benefits of participating in activities outside are perhaps more obvious, but should not be overlooked.

I suggest finding a local park and see what activities and opportunities are available. Here is a great app that gets you outdoors and moving, can be played with friends, and engages your mind. This was something that got me outside having fun with others in the beginning of my own journey.
